Case 4: Painful Gums

This 79-year-old patient had gone through full mouth osseous gum surgery for her periodontal disease. Twenty years later her disease had returned, and she was in the advanced stages of gum disease. Her gums were very painful and bled a lot. She was embarrassed to smile due to the heavy staining from using a chlorhexadine mouth rinse.

She was given the option of full mouth surgery again or full mouth perioscopy. She chose perioscopy, and only six weeks later showed beautiful results. Her gums are extremely healthy and she says she feels better physically. She was especially pleased with the results because she knows the health risks associated with periodontal disease, especially when it is as bad as hers was. She is no longer embarrassed to smile and continues to do well.
